What a Custom Pool Really Costs in the Phoenix Valley

June 12, 2026 · 6 min read

The honest answer is "it depends" — but that's not very useful when you're trying to plan. So here's how a custom pool budget actually breaks down in the Valley, and where the number really moves.

[This is sample copy to show the article layout. Replace with your real article.] Every backyard is different, but most custom pool projects in the Phoenix area share the same cost structure. Understanding the pieces helps you make confident decisions instead of reacting to a single big number at the end.

The foundation: size, shape, and depth

The shell is the starting point. A clean rectangular pool is the most efficient to build; freeform shapes, vanishing edges, and raised spas add both material and labor. Depth matters too — a deeper pool means more excavation, more concrete, and more water to circulate and heat.

A negative-edge design adds drama — and cost. It's a feature worth budgeting for intentionally.

Where the budget really moves

In our experience, these are the choices that shift the final number the most:

  • Water features — scuppers, sheet waterfalls, and bubblers each add plumbing and finish work.
  • Finishes — glass tile and natural stone read beautifully but cost more than standard plaster and pavers.
  • Decking and surrounds — the area around the pool is often as large an investment as the pool itself.
  • Shade and structures — a ramada or covered lounge is a project of its own.
  • Site conditions — sloped lots, tight access, and rock can all affect excavation.

Where it pays to invest — and where to save

If we had to generalize: invest in the things that are hard to change later (the shell, the plumbing, the structural elements) and stay flexible on the things you can add over time (some landscape, certain features). A well-built foundation gives you room to grow into the backyard you ultimately want.

The best way to get a real number for your yard is a conversation about your space, your goals, and your timeline. That's where we start with every client.
